Frequently asked questions
-
What are the criteria by which you evaluate potential visitors? We want people who are dedicated to their research, but we are not stuffy enough to require credentials. Many of our visitors have or are working on PhDs, but the only requirement is a strong background in your field.
-
How long do I stay?Stays range from a few days to a couple of weeks, and occasionally longer. Visitors are usually referred by someone known to the PSI community, and arrangements to visit are made on a case-by-case basis.
-
What is the social atmosphere/expectation?The atmosphere at PSI is more like an artists’ retreat than a conventional institute; one that encourages socializing, but does not require it. Guests, unless specifically arranged to stay in the main house, have their own private cabin to which they can retreat at any time. Each evening, residents meet in the social spaces to eat, play games, watch films, and discuss ideas.
-
Where is PSI located, and how do I get there? We have two branches of PSI. Maui: About nine miles up the Haleakala Highway from Kahului Airport (OGG). We can usually work with guests to arrange a pickup if necessary. Renting a car during your visit provides maximal independence, but there are grocery stores within walking distance, as well as a nearby bus stop that runs to other parts of the island. Utah: About 15 minutes south of Salt Lake City. We are 15 minutes from Snowbird, 25 to Solitude, and 45 to Park City. We can usually work with guests to arrange a pickup if necessary. Renting a car during your visit provides maximal independence.
-
What if I'm not a research scientist, and I want to visit? What we are creating at PSI is an inspiring environment. As part of that, we welcome science-friendly creatives, engineers, and, in special circumstances, even chemists.

-
